Democracy in the World After Thirty Years

marking the

30th Anniversary of President Ronald Reagan’s Westminster Address
featuring former Secretaries of State
George P. Shultz and Madeleine K. Albright

at the

Ronald Reagan Presidential Library
June 5, 2012
9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

On June 8, 1982, President Ronald Reagan addressed the British Parliament at Westminster Palace in what was to become one of his most famous and important speeches. The Westminster Address, Reagan’s speech, in combination with the long-standing efforts of Congressional Democrat Dante Fascell, launched the creation of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and sparked the growth of democracy assistance as a major new field of international cooperation.

Since its establishment in 1983, the Endowment has flourished as one of our country’s most remarkable bipartisan endeavors – a truly unique institution where Democrats, Republicans, and members of both the labor and business communities have worked together to advance the universal values of freedom, human rights, and democracy in every region of the world.

At this special occasion commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Address, we will be joined by two of America’s most dedicated ambassadors, George Shultz and Madeleine Albright to discuss the progress of this democratic initiative over the past three decades.  We will also hear from prominent world leaders in the democracy movement including former president of Peru Alejandro Toledo and Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Audronius Azubalis, as well as key activists from the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and China.

Finally, NED will pay tribute to the dedicated service of former Congressman and SEC Chairman Chistopher Cox, who served on NED’s board of directors and is a great champion of the struggle for democracy.
